CAR BUYING RESOURCES · BY MIKE

What should I bring when buying a car?

Bring a valid driver's license, proof of insurance, proof of income such as recent pay stubs, proof of address, your preferred payment method, and — if you're trading a vehicle — the title or your loan payoff information plus all keys.

The checklist

  • Valid driver's license
  • Proof of insurance
  • Recent pay stubs or other proof of income
  • Proof of residence, such as a utility bill
  • Down payment method
  • Trade-in title or lender payoff information
  • All keys, remotes and service records for a trade-in

Why it matters

Most delays at the end of a purchase come from missing paperwork, not from the negotiation. Sorting this out beforehand is the difference between an hour and an afternoon.
