Car Financing in Dallas, In Plain English

Financing is where most car deals get confusing. I'm not a lender and I can't approve anything — what I can do is explain how the process works, help you gather what's needed, and submit your application to the dealership's lenders so you can see the options available to you.

  • Straight answers on terms
  • Applications go to multiple lenders
  • Subject to lender approval

How car financing actually works

You complete a credit application at the dealership. It goes to lenders the dealership works with — banks, credit unions and manufacturer finance companies. Each decides independently whether to offer terms, and at what rate. Nothing is guaranteed, and the terms you're offered depend on the lender's review of your situation.

What lenders generally look at

  • Credit history and score
  • Income and how long you've been employed
  • Existing monthly debt obligations
  • Down payment and any trade-in equity
  • The vehicle itself: age, mileage and value relative to the loan

What moves your monthly payment

  • Vehicle price, minus your down payment and trade-in equity
  • APR — the annual cost of the loan, including interest and certain fees
  • Loan term — a longer term lowers the payment but increases total interest paid
  • Taxes, title and registration
  • Any optional products you choose to add

What to bring

  • Valid driver's license
  • Proof of income, such as recent pay stubs
  • Proof of insurance
  • Proof of residence if requested
  • Trade-in title or current loan payoff information

COMMON QUESTIONS

Answers, up front.

Can you guarantee I'll be approved?

No. Nobody honestly can. Approval, rate and terms are decided by lenders based on your situation.

Should I get pre-approved at my bank first?

It's a reasonable move — it gives you a benchmark. Bring it in and we'll compare it against what the dealership's lenders offer.

Does applying affect my credit?

A credit application typically results in a credit inquiry. Ask before anything is submitted so you know what to expect.
