How it happens
- A small or no down payment
- A long loan term, so the balance falls slower than the value
- Rolling a previous shortfall into the current loan
- Higher-than-average mileage or condition issues
CAR BUYING RESOURCES · BY MIKE
Negative equity means you owe more on your car loan than the vehicle is currently worth. It's common early in a long loan or after a small down payment, and it matters most when you want to trade the vehicle in.
You can pay the difference, roll it into the next loan and accept a higher amount financed, or keep the vehicle until the balance and the value meet. There's no trick that makes it disappear — but knowing the number early gives you a real choice.
