CAR BUYING RESOURCES · BY MIKE

Can I trade in a car I still owe money on?

Yes. The dealership appraises your vehicle and obtains the payoff from your lender. If the appraisal is higher than the payoff, the difference is equity you can apply to your next car. If it's lower, that negative equity must be paid or added to your new loan.

Positive equity

Your trade covers the payoff and leaves money over. That surplus can act as your down payment, reducing what you finance next.

Negative equity

You owe more than the car appraises for. Rolling that shortfall into the new loan increases the amount financed, the payment and the time it takes to get right-side up. Sometimes the better move is to wait, or to choose a less expensive vehicle. I'll show you the numbers either way.

What to bring

  • Your lender's name, account number and current payoff amount
  • Registration and driver's license
  • All keys and remotes
