CAR BUYING RESOURCES · BY MIKE

Should I buy new or used?

Buy new if you drive a lot of miles, plan to keep the car for years and want full warranty coverage and current safety technology. Buy used if you want more vehicle for the money and would rather let the first owner absorb the steepest depreciation.

The case for new

  • Full factory warranty and known history
  • Latest safety and driver-assistance technology
  • Manufacturer incentives, which sometimes include special financing rates

The case for used

  • More vehicle, trim or space for the same budget
  • Slower depreciation during your ownership
  • Certified pre-owned adds inspection and extended coverage

How to decide

Annual mileage and how long you'll keep it usually settle the question. High-mileage, long-term owners tend to do better new. Everyone else should at least price a two- to three-year-old equivalent before deciding.
