What a down payment does
- Reduces the amount financed and therefore the interest you pay
- Lowers your monthly payment
- Can improve the terms a lender offers
- Protects you against negative equity in the early months
CAR BUYING RESOURCES · BY MIKE
There's no single required amount. Many buyers aim for roughly 10–20% of the price. What matters is that a larger down payment lowers the amount financed, reduces your monthly payment, can improve the terms offered, and keeps you from owing more than the car is worth early on.
Cash, trade-in equity, or a combination. If your current vehicle is worth more than you owe on it, that difference works just like cash toward your next car.
Putting every dollar down and leaving nothing for insurance, registration and the first set of tires isn't a win. Keep a reserve.
